Many architects and designers are somewhat familiar with or have at least heard of Ipe. Most, however, are not familiar with any of the other, equally durable and long-lasting, species of Brazilian hardwoods. This presentation will explain six of the most popular species of Brazilian hardwoods for decking, flooring, and siding. The course also addresses these species in terms of color, grain, hardness, fire rating, and sustainability factors.

Learning objectives

Attendees will be able to:

  1. Contrast Brazilian hardwoods to domestic hardwoods based on hardness using the Janka Hardness Scale
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the ASTM Fire Rating System (Tunnel Test) and how it applies to construction materials
  3. Differentiate between six species of Brazilian hardwoods based on color and grain
  4. Identify best applications for Brazilian hardwoods and the basics of installation requirements

Lunch will be provided to registered attendees.
