Lightweight Building Skins

The course outlines a brief history of lightweight construction with an introductory look at the new materials and the digital advances which make this technology compelling today. Participants will learn when to use this type of construction and understand definitions of key components while addressing structure, form, and climate. Further, the presentation outlines considerations for issues affecting the growing use of these technologies and materials in façade design. It also describes the design process from idea generation to problem-solving and looks into the future and advantages of this technology in buildings today.

Participants will learn:

  • A brief history of lightweight building skins
  • Different materials available, their pros and cons
  • Various types and their basic properties including energy, sustainability, lighting, and acoustics
  • The basic design process for developing these enclosures in architecture
