Structural Challenges of Building Renovation

PM&A – An AIA Atlanta Silver Patron

Learn how to identify the structural system in an existing building, satisfy building code requirements for structural modifications, make design decisions based on the adaptability of the structural system and recognize high loading scenarios that may require the input of a structural engineer in the design process.

Attendees will gain insight on the planning and design of interior renovations and potential structural modifications of existing buildings.

Learning objectives

  1. A review of the typical structural systems and load resisting elements encountered in existing buildings to identify how these may affect design decisions.
  2. Determine the building codes and important documents that are required during renovation, including the load requirements based on the occupancy.
  3. Identify the structural components potentially affected by building modifications, such as floor openings, relocation of structural supports, and partial building demolition.
  4. Identify aspects building additions such as signage, façade accents, awnings or equipment that increases the loading applied to a structure.

Catered lunch provided to individuals registered as of March 19.
