Description

Vegetated roofs were created for aesthetic reasons, but have evolved to include significant environmental advantages for building owners such as improved energy efficiency. This course will explain how vegetated roofs can be used to mitigate the damaging environmental effects of stormwater runoff and urban heat islands. As well, specific installation steps and code considerations will be discussed, as will the history, purpose, benefits, and suggested maintenance plans for vegetated roofs.

Learning objectives

  1. Understand shading-automation objectives to optimize performance for various types of shading applications and site locations.
  2. Be able to discuss shading automation objectives so all building users – including those who require ADA accommodation – will be safe and comfortable.
  3. Identify elements of automated shading systems, and discuss tradeoffs among three main system designs for a range of structure types.
  4. Create a basic automation specification that meets a number of the identified objectives.
